4 Benefits of Reading

With the rise of electronics and distractions such as cell phones and tablets, fewer and fewer people are reading regularly. Unfortunately, this is a problem for many reasons. Reading can be one of the best things we can do for ourselves not only emotionally and mentally, but also physically. There are all sorts of benefits that reading can provide. If you’re looking for a great reason to read more, here are some of the many benefits that you can expect to gain.

Improved Memory

As we get older our brains do too. As such our memories may start to decline, and we may even develop memory-related diseases like Alzheimer’s. Yet, there are ways to combat memory issues and one of the most popular ways is reading. Studies show that reading can improve your memory significantly when done on a daily basis.

Because it stimulates your brain, you can consider it a sort of exercise for your mind. If going to the gym helps strengthen your arms and legs, then reading a book helps strengthen your brain in the same way.

Reduced Stress

Studies show that there is a direct link between reduced stress and reading. People who read regularly are much less anxious and often less inclined to get angry. Rather than spending your time “doom scrolling” or distracting your mind with meaningless activities, you should instead consider spending your time reading.

Reading brings you to a peaceful state where you’re not focused on what’s going wrong in your life but rather focused on the story at hand. It’s almost a meditation of sorts and encourages you to be at peace rather than tense and fixated.

Extends Your Vocabulary

Have you ever come across someone that sounds just plain smart? More often than not, the reason for this is that they have an expansive vocabulary. One of the best ways to expand and enhance your vocabulary is by reading.

The words go into your subconscious and increase your database of words to choose from when you want to express yourself. Not only can it help you feel more confident with your language skills, but it can actually make you a broader thinker. When you have more words to choose from you’re able to express yourself in a more complex and expansive way.

Improved Critical Thinking

Reading stories that have complex and thrilling plots can improve the way that we solve problems and analyze situations. As you navigate the plot your mind starts to imagine all of the different possibilities and predictions. This trains your brain to become more analytical in the real world. Not only can this help you in your personal life, but also your professional life.
