Living at home was a little bit like magic. You never had to worry about things like budgeting or shopping for groceries, not to mention household management. Those things just seemed to happen and you got to enjoy their benefits. But now that you’re moving to Chennai on your own, you get to experience the magic for yourself. Say bye to your comfort zone and say hello to a life of independence in your PG in Porur. You’re stepping into a new world and you’ve got to be ready to handle it. If that’s making you anxious, hold on for a second and take some deep breaths. You’re not alone in this journey. And to help you have a great time when you move to your PG, we’ve got a list of some essential things that you should bring with you when you move. These are bound to ensure that you’re comfortable right from day one. So, check them out!
Welcome to your PG room. It’s… small. But you’ve got a great new roommate to share it with! Getting used to sharing your space won’t take long, especially if you and your roommate have some common interests. But getting used to sharing a single power socket? That’s a never ending battle. After all, you and your roommate both have phones and laptops, not to mention lamps, hair dryers and other appliances that need to be plugged in or charged. Well, put an end to the squabbles before they can even begin by carrying an extension board with you. They’re inexpensive and super practical. Plus, if you get a board with an extendable wire, you’ll be able to position it in the most suitable place in your room.
Like we said, PG rooms don’t tend to have a lot of extra storage space. Which means you have to get creative about creating space for yourself. You probably won’t have permission to drill nails into the walls, which is where adhesive hooks can come in handy. These little hooks can bear a lot of weight and have several versatile uses. Attach them to the inside of your cupboard to display your accessories, or on the back of your door to hang your keys. You could even create a row of hooks above your desk to hang items like your coffee mug to dry.
The pandemic may be on its last legs, but our new found respect for sanitisation sure isn’t. Disinfectant wipes have to be one of the greatest things ever invented for keeping your room clean without taking too much effort. So, make sure you pack some before you move to Chennai. They’re super handy for wiping down any hard to clean surfaces or to remove dust from the tops of your drawers, shelves and even your ceiling fan. Plus, you’ll never have to worry about crumbs again!
Reusable plastic bowls or boxes
Yes, we all know that plastic is bad for the environment, but you probably already have some at home. So DON’T buy new ones when you reach your PG. Get some of the old Tupperwares that you have lying around at home. These come in really handy whether it’s for your midnight microwave meals or to create DIY desk dividers and you’ll be really glad that you brought them. A roll of labels will also come in handy if your containers aren’t transparent.
A desk fan
Look, if you chose one of the 1 BHK flats for rent in Chennai, you wouldn’t have to worry about this. But if you’re living with roommates in a hostel, a table fan can be really helpful. Especially during Chennai’s hot summers when your room is likely to get stuffy, having a desk fan can improve circulation and cool you down. Plus, you can always try the old trick of hanging a wet cloth in front of your fan to create a DIY air conditioner effect.
Those are the top five things that we recommend you should bring with you when you move to a PG in Chennai. So, what are you waiting for? Start packing!
